DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. NLCP is a state-wide program\, but classes focus on the characteristics and plants in the region in which they are taught. \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nNOTE: This class is hosted by the Clear Lake Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) and is specific to the Houston-Galveston area. \n\n\n\nZoom access to the in-person class.  Zoom attendees will watch a video “plant walk.”  \n\n\n\nOnline Test:  After completing the class you will be sent a link to the online test which you will have 3 days to complete. \n\n\n\nClass OutlineLevel 1: Introduction to Native Landscapes \n\n\n\n\nLearn the value of including and preserving native plants in landscapes\n\n\n\nUnderstand the differences between sustainable and conventional development\n\n\n\nDiscover your Texas ecoregion\, vegetation\, and soil.\n\n\n\nBecome familiar with 45 native Texas plants recommended for your landscape and 5 plants to avoid\n\n\n\n\nLevel 1 is a prerequisite for Level 2 and 3. Level 1 is not required for Level 4 which can be taken as a standalone class. Levels 2\, 3\, 4 may be taken in any order. \n\n\n\nThe Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) is a four-level certification program that teaches the value of including and preserving native plants in landscapes.
