DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. DESCRIPTION:The Boerne Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) is thrilled to announce a special event to celebrate its 25th anniversary\, to be held on Friday\, May 23\, 2025\, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Patrick Heath Public Library in Boerne.  \n\n\n\n\nThis milestone celebration will feature a variety of activities designed to honor the chapter’s accomplishments\, highlight the beauty\, importance\, and environmental benefits of native plants\, as well as showcase the local art and creativity of the Boerne community. \n\n\n\nThe anniversary event will include the following: \n\n\n\n\nUnveiling of a Special Book Section Devoted to Native Plants: Attendees will get an exclusive look at a newly curated collection of books\, all focused on the topic of Texas native plants\, and available for check-out at the Boerne Public Library.\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Presentation to a Native Plant Advocate: The Boerne Chapter of NPSOT will recognize a dedicated native plant advocate who has made significant contributions to the chapter and its mission of promoting native plant conservation in the Boerne area. The recipient will be honored for their passion and efforts in supporting the chapter’s initiatives.\n\n\n\n\n\nInaugural Boerne NPSOT Art Show Featuring Local Artists and Native Flora and Fauna: Local artists will display their works inspired by the beauty of native plants\, wildlife\, and the natural landscape\, offering a visual celebration of the region’s ecological wonders. Art works are exhibited in the Gallery Space on the first floor of the Patrick Heath Public Library from May 1 –  May 30.  The Gallery Space will be open during the library’s regular hours and during our anniversary event.\n\n\n\n\n\nGrand Opening of the Native Plant Seed Library: The Boerne Chapter of NPSOT will unveil a new initiative aimed at promoting conservation and utilization of native plants and plant habitats in the Boerne area. The Native Plant Seed Library\, located inside the Patrick Heath Public Library in Boerne\, will allow community members to get native plant seeds for free and grow their own garden\, and harvest new seeds from mature plants to return to the library.\n\n\n\n\n\nGuided Tours of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Behind the Public Library: Join us for guided tours of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) behind the library. In partnership with the city and other community organizations\, the Boerne Chapter of NPSOT is working to restore this space to a thriving native habitat and wildlife corridor within the city. Explore a hidden gem of native flora and fauna\, learn about our conservation efforts\, and gain insight into the local ecosystem. SUMMARY:Insects:Nature's Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Location: The Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nThis is a two-part event: \n\n\n\nPart 1: Families with upper elementary age children and adults should arrive by 7:50 am to register for an 8 am sharp Entomology Talk covering types of insect\, morphology\, and the critical role of insects as pollinators. Then join families with younger children on the savanna for an hour of insect catch\, ID\, and release. We will provide nets. \n\n\n\nPart 2: Families with younger children should arrive and sign-in by 8:50 to join the earlier group as it moves from the classroom to the savanna. \n\n\n\nSpecial Note: Definitely wear long pants and bring insect repellant and\, sunscreen. We will be walking on sunny grassy areas. \n\n\n\nOur objective is to learn about insects\, identify some of the more common species found in our local area\, and learn the role of insects in the environment. The event will be led by Nicolas Phillips an expert student of Entomology\, an award-winning insect collector\, and an Integrated Pest Control professional. Nicolas has been an enthusiast and lover of insects since early childhood and brings his passion and knowledge to our park. \n\n\n\nThe morning begins in the small classroom with an hour overview of all you ever wanted to know about these arthropods. We will then move to the nearby savanna where families with younger children will join us to catch\, ID\, and release insects. Nicolas will identify and elaborate upon our captured specimens to explain general concepts. The netted insects are then released back into nature. The park is a great place to find a variety of interesting insects. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive on the patio at 7:50 am SHARP (or by 8:50 am SHARP for families with young children). Minors must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs are not appropriate for this event. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, geared to families with children\, as well as interested adults. This will not be a hike and should end around 10:00 am. \n\n\n\nDonations of $3 individual or $5 family to the PHP Conservancy are suggested\, to support park educational activities.
