DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month. \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:What One Million Rain Gardens Could Do for Houston - August 21
DESCRIPTION:The title of this talk is taken from something Harris County infrastructure czar Art Storey is reputed to have said: “If every building in Harris County had a small rainwater catchment next to it\, we probably wouldn’t need Harris County Flood Control.” This presentation by Dominic Boyer explores the transformative potential of rain gardens in urban design. \n\n\n\nDrawing from several years of hands-on experience designing and creating community-led rain gardens in Northeast Houston\, Boyer sheds light on a vital\, yet often overlooked\, form of green stormwater infrastructure. In neighborhoods historically underserved by conventional flood control systems\, these rain gardens are not just detention basins—they cultivate native plants and wildlife\, serve as community amenities\, enhance public spaces\, and foster civic participation in infrastructure planning and maintenance. \n\n\n\nThrough thoughtful reflection of his work in Northeast Houston\, Boyer will explore the wisdom behind Storey’s observation. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDominic Boyer is the Director of the Social Design Lab at Rice University and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Rice Sustainability Institute. As one of the founders of the field of Energy Humanities\, he has been writing on energy politics and energy transition for many years. As a designer\, he helped create the world’s first glacier memorial\, which was named a Finalist for a 2020 Beazley Design of the Year Award by the London Design Museum. The same project inspired The Economist to create its first-ever obituary for a non-human. The author of nine books and volumes and more than 100 research articles\, Boyer’s latest book is No More Fossils (U Minnesota Press\, 2023). His Houston-based research currently focuses on green stormwater infrastructure as a means toward greater climate resilience and environmental equity. He is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. SUMMARY:Ethnobotany (Bring extra water due to heat)
DESCRIPTION:Location: Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nThe focus of this month’s event is Ethnobotany. Our presenter\, Josie Gonzales\, is a Certified Interpretive Guide and Texas Master Naturalist. She’ll discuss Ethnobotany — how people of a particular culture and region make use of native plants. Plants sustain people not only as food and as medicine\, but provide materials\, dyes\, tannins\, wax\, latex\, soap\, resin and oil. \n\n\n\nThere will be a brief overview of ethnobotanical concepts prior to the walk. On the walk itself a wide variety of forbs\, shrubs\, and trees will be discussed from the standpoint of medicinal\, utilitarian\, and nutritional uses. Participants will have a chance to look at and ask questions about these plants. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive BEFORE 8;00 am to sign up for an 8:00 am start. \n\n\n\nMinors must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. This presentation is only appropriate for dogs who are leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy–it is definitely suitable for families\, with flat terrain\, and a slow pace. This will be a mile walk\, and the event will last about two hours\, ending back at the Urban Ecology Center around 10:00 am. \n\n\n\nThe trail is a natural surface so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and\, dependent on the weather\, bring water\, sun protection\, and dress appropriate for the day and season. $3 individual or $5 family donations to the PHP Conservancy are suggested to support the activities in the park. \n\n\n\nThis event’s sponsors are the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy\, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Natural Areas Office\, the Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, the Native Plant Society of Texas-San Antonio chapter\, and the Alamo Group of the Sierra Club. \n\n\n\nContact Stan Drezek (stanwendre@gmail.com) for additional information or questions. \n\n\n\nLEARN MORE AND RSVP

Interested volunteers can contact Cross Timbers trail steward Christie Tull\, at greenwoodfarminc@aol.com or call 817-307-9307.  See you on the trail! \n\n\n\nIf you can’t do manual labor be an education liason – community service volunteers need guidance to introduce them to the nature trail’s needs and to help identify plants. Although the hottest part of the summer is upon us\, we will hold the August workday Saturday\, August 23 from 9:00 – 11:00. \n\n\n\nVolunteer hours count towards Texas Master Naturalist and Texas Master Gardeners. \n\n\n\nAbout the Nature Trail\n\n\n\nChandor Nature Trail is just under one mile long and is open for hikers and their leashed dogs free of charge during Chandor Garden hours. The Garden’s address is 711 W Lee Street in Weatherford.
