SUMMARY:Invasive Species Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:National Invasive Species Awareness Week is February 23 – 27\, 2026. To support this effort\, the Society will have two initiatives: \n\n\n\nJanuary – Invasive Species BioblitzJanuary 24th & 25 – Spend the weekend identifying invasive species in your area! Use iNaturalist to capture the location of these species to help build a picture of invaders in the area. This information will help with the February effort: The Great Pull! To support each chapter\, the state can create a bioblitz campaign in iNaturalist for your group to use\, along with other graphics for Social Media platforms. Please send a request to our Invasive Species Committee at invasives.plant.team@npsot.org. \n\n\n\nThe Chapter(s) with (1) the most observations and (2) the most participants will receive a prize! \n\n\n\nUpcoming in February – Statewide Effort: The Great Pull!To kick off National Invasive Species Awareness Week\, NPSOT will have a statewide coordinated event to remove invasive species! More detailed information will follow in January.Chapters are encouraged to use the data collected in the Bioblitz to identify hot-spots of invasive species and plan a group removal event.Species removal can occur on public or private land but requires permission from the appropriate parties\, such as land owners\, the city\, or county entities. The State Invasive Species Committee can help with this effort or brainstorm ideas.

SUMMARY:Rosettes\, the Harbingers of Spring\, Fredericksburg\, Jan 30
DESCRIPTION:We had to cancel the January 27 meeting due to the residues of the snow/ice storm in the Hill Country. But Kathy Saucier\, our Gillespie County resident Certified Wildscape instructor\, will still make a live presentation on YouTube on January 30 at 3:00 pm. \n\n\n\n\n“Do you see those tiny rosettes that are nestled against the earth? Each one is soaking up sunshine.” \n\n\n\n\n\nA closer look under the fallen stems and leaves of last year’s wildflowers and grasses reveals that many new plants have already germinated and are showing their first and second sets of leaves. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Each one is converting winter moisture into the wondrous explosion of color that makes the Hill Country famous for its wildflower display” Saucier said. What you don’t see is what the plant will produce. Will it be a plant you desire or one you are trying to control? \n\n\n\n\nDuring this evening presentation\, Saucier will open our eyes to the variety of rosettes that are the opening scene of summer’s perennials. She will also identify which of those rosettes is a weed. Join us January 30. Click the Live event below.
