SUMMARY:iNaturalist City Nature Challenge 2026 Identification Period
DESCRIPTION:Wrapping up City Nature Challenge 2026:  your help is needed! \n\n\n\nWhile the time is past for making observations\, there is still time for identifying observations! \n\n\n\nJOIN THE NPSOT CIVIC PROJECT AND START IDENTIFYING OBSERVATIONS! \n\n\n\nFirst\, did you make I-Naturalist observations between April 24 and April 27 as part of the City Nature Challenge 2026:  San Antonio Metro Area (CNC-SA)?  If so\, do you know that in addition to joining the CNC-SA project\, you can also join the NPSOT civic project?  This is part of a competition among metro area civic groups.  If you join the NPSOT project before May 10 at 11:59 pm\, your observations will not only be credited to CNC-SA\, but also to the NPSOT civic project (as well as to any Team\, Corporate\, Community or Campus project that you have joined).   \n\n\n\nTo join the NPSOT civic project\, see  Civic -NPSOT project.  From your cell\, make sure you are signed into your I-Naturalist account\, go to your projects\, search for the NPSOT civic project 2026\, and click “join” in upper right corner of screen. To see the competing civic projects in our area\, go to the Civic umbrella group.  \n\n\n\nRemember\, you have until May 10 at 11:59 pm to join the NPSOT civic project 2026 and to make additional I-Naturalist entries for observations done between April 24 and 27.  Note:  If you already joined another civic project (e.g. AAMN or SARA River Warriors)\, remember that it is best to register for only one civic project if you want the entries to count towards a group’s competition totals.  If you join multiple civic projects\, your observations will show on all projects\, but will not be counted towards the competition. \n\n\n\nAll of the NPSOT chapters in the approved  San Antonio Metro Area (12 counties) are grouped together in the NPSOT civic project.  So if you know folks in other NPSOT chapters in these counties\, please encourage them to join the NPSOT civic project as well! \n\n\n\nSecond\, CNC-SA organizers could really use the support of NPSOT members in identifying CNC observations (especially plants).   Even if you weren’t able to make observations during the event\, you can still contribute by helping with identifications. Even out-of-state members can review and ID observations from our area\, and those contributions count toward our CNC efforts.  There are several identification (ID) parties happening this week\, with a few more still being finalized and not yet on the schedule.  Look for scheduled events here: Link \n\n\n\nJOIN THE NPSOT CIVIC PROJECT AND START IDENTIFYING OBSERVATIONS!

SUMMARY:All Seasons Field Trip: Spring\, Benbrook\, North Central Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the Benbrook Environmentally Sensitive Area with us. This 700-acre site has been designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) by the Army Corps of Engineers. Part of the greater Fort Worth Prairie ecoregion\, it offers views of the unspoiled grand prairie with riparian features. \n\n\n\nThere are a multitude of native prairie grasses and forbs. Seeing it in winter\, spring\, summer\, and fall provides a better understanding of the ecosystem and an appreciation for nature’s beauty. It’s great for birders year-round and for those interested in looking for monarch caterpillars (in April & May). \n\n\n\nWe will walk about two miles\, and you will need sturdy shoes and tick prevention/precautions. There will also be some rocky-ish ups and downs. Kim Conrow\, a member of NPSOT and a Texas Master Naturalist\, will lead the hike. Kim has been coming to the ESA for several years and is eager to share her knowledge of this area with us. \n\n\n\nYou do not need to be a NPSOT member to attend this event. Attendees will need to sign a liability and photo waiver. This is a FREE event! \n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to 20 people. You can sign up for one date\, or all of them! Participants who complete all 4 will receive a certificate. \n\n\n\nSign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4FA8A72AA3FAC52-milkweed \n\n\n\nSPRING: Sunday\, May 10\, 4:00pm (2-hour event)SUMMER: Saturday\, July 18\, 7:30am (2-hour event)FALL: TBA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOCATION:Meeting point will be emailed to registrants.Benbrook Lake AreaBenbrook\, TX

SUMMARY:Nick Kowalske\, Texas Conservation Alliance\, Propagating North Texas Native Plants\, North Central Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join Nick Kowalske from Texas Conservation Alliance to learn about the work that TCA does in their Native Plant Propagation Center to grow native plants for distribution across North Texas. Propagation is a big task and a big topic\, so get ready for a whirlwind discussion of seed treatment\, transplanting protocols\, plant policies\, and our favorite moments from the greenhouse. Come with questions and be prepared for a very nerdy evening! \n\n\n\nNick Kowalske is a recent graduate from Harvard University with a degree in Integrative Biology who is also a HUGE native plant nerd! SUMMARY:Native Swagger: Turning Heads with Texas Native Plants – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, May 14
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, May 14\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be “Native Swagger: Turning Heads with Texas Native Plants” with Andrea DeLong-Amaya. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nPlease note => This month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for YouTube. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Native plants are ecological powerhouses while representing our botanical heritage. But too often\, they’re dismissed as messy or weedy. It’s time to change the narrative! In this talk\, we’ll explore how to use native plants to create gardens that are true people-pleasers. From wild to formal designs\, lawns to containers\, sun to shade\, wildlife gardens to water gardens\, even edible gardens — you’ll see how natives provide habitat while they also serve as the anchor for stunning landscapes. Whether you’re already a native-plant champion or just native-curious\, you’ll come away with ideas to elevate your garden and give native plants the starring role they deserve. \n\n\n\nBONUS BOOK SIGNING! Bring your copy of Andrea’s book The Texas Native Plant Primer for Andrea to sign! If you don’t have it yet\, be sure to purchase the primer before the meeting. Copies will NOT be available for sale at the meeting. Options for purchasing include the NPSOT Bookstore\, or Timber Press. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker:Andrea DeLong-Amaya (ahn-DRAY-ah di-LONG ah-MY-ah)Horticulture Educator\, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center \n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, Andrea DeLong-Amaya has been living her life’s mission to honor the natural world through presenting and teaching classes about the horticulture\, ecology\, and importance of native plants in planned landscapes. \n\n\n\nOver the prior 21 years\, she served as the Wildflower Center’s Director of Horticulture\, overseeing the nine acres of Texas native plant gardens\, and nursery programs. She’s been a staff member since 1998 and has over 30 years of experience with Texas native plants in horticulture\, ecology and garden design.
