SUMMARY:Monarchs & Milkweed: Texas Gulf Coast Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Science-based monarch workshop and native milkweed giveaway \n\n\n\nInstructor: Christine Anastas\, Master Gardener and Master Naturalist \n\n\n\nMonarch butterflies are among the most recognizable and beloved pollinators in Texas—but their migration is at risk. The Texas Gulf Coast plays an integral role in the survival of these iconic butterflies. \n\n\n\nThis educational workshop will explore the Monarch life cycle\, their migration through Texas\, and current scientific research\, including studies on Tropical Milkweed\, OE disease\, and home Monarch rearing. Participants will leave equipped to become Monarch ambassadors in their communities. \n\n\n\nTo help turn learning into action\, attendees will receive native milkweed plants\, making it easy to support Monarch conservation right away. All NPSOT Clear Lake members will receive up to three native milkweed plants* for attending. Additionally\, any attendee who brings in Tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) for disposal will receive one native milkweed plant per Tropical Milkweed\, up to three. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a gardener\, nature enthusiast\, or simply interested in protecting local wildlife\, this workshop provides valuable\, science-based information and a meaningful way to help Monarchs thrive along the Texas Gulf Coast. \n\n\n\n*Members who register by January 31 will receive three native milkweed plants at the event; members who register after January 31 will receive two native milkweed plants. \n\n\n\nLocationBayou Building\, Garden Room (1510)University of Houston-Clear Lake2700 Bay Area BlvdHouston\, TX 77058

SUMMARY:Tuesday Workday at EIH
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to propagate native plants while helping grow plants for the chapter’s plant sales. Activities include starting plants from seeds\, cuttings\, and other methods\, as well as making labels\, mixing soil\, and prepping growing trays. \n\n\n\nHabitat volunteers may also help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. If you’re not sure\, please call 281-283-3950 or 281-283-3045\, and we’ll let you know if we’re digging in. \n\n\n\nLocationEnvironmental Institute of Houston (Click link for Google Map)University of Houston-Clear LakeNorth Office Annex (NOA) 1 Building2700 Bay Area Blvd.
