SUMMARY:Be Prepared for the Next Wildfire with Fire-Resistant Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:A spark can quickly become a wildfire like it did during the Crabapple fire that burned nearly 10\,000 acres and destroyed nine residences and several other buildings. Are you ready for the next fire? A fire could strike at any moment and with the right conditions threaten your home regardless if you live on acreage in the county or in a subdivision. \n\n\n\nDayziah Petruska\, Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator for Texas A&M Forest Service Region 6 (which includes Gillespie County) will speak about the basics of fire behavior and how property owners can prepare for and decrease the risk of structure loss in wildfire situations. She will also discuss home hardening strategies and fire-resistant landscaping. \n\n\n\nThe meeting begins at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg) and doors open at 6:30 p.m. for social time.

The meeting starts at 6:30 with a social time and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n“The vibrant ecosystem Arlon cultivated has provided the perfect setting for capturing detailed images of pollinators and other insects\,” said Jonathan Watt\, new Board President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “His photography\, which now serves as both a creative endeavor and an educational tool\, highlights the ecological value of native plants.” \n\n\n\n“I’m looking forward to sharing the things that worked and those that didn’t while converting our lawn into a pollinator paradise\,” said Motsch. “I’m also going to share a lot of close-up insect photos and discuss the potential for homeowners to create sustainable landscapes that benefit both the environment and their personal hobbies.” \n\n\n\nMotsch has lived near Center Point for seven years and moved there from Midland\, TX. SUMMARY:“Get Real” Garden Design with Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Fredericksburg Chapter of Native Plant Society of Texas Speaker Paula Stone on April 23 \n\n\n\n Find out how to make your landscape maintenance easier by choosing the right layout\, the right style and the best plants for your area at the next meeting of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, Fredericksburg Chapter on April 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Halle. \n\n\n\nPaula Stone\, Vice President of the Fredericksburg Chapter of the NPSOT\, will share her extensive knowledge about landscape design using native Texas plants. \n\n\n\n“I’ll show you practical ways to build gardens that will enhance your property and be less work as time goes by\,” noted Stone. “I once heard someone say that\, ‘The gardening should get easier as the gardener gets older.’” \n\n\n\n“Paula is a great teacher when it comes to learning how to minimize weeding and watering while maximizing entertainment and enjoyment\,” said Deborah Simmons\, president of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “She’ll explore ways to make that happen in our Hill Country gardens.” \n\n\n\nOver the last 15 years\, Stone has tried various plants and gardening techniques to deal with the caliche soil\, lack of rainfall\, excessive heat\, and occasional ice storm that are common to Gillespie County.  Her presentation will take that all into account as she describes what’s needed in an easy-to-maintain native landscape.  Stone hopes that people new to gardening in the Hill Country will benefit from the many tips she will be sharing.   \n\n\n\nStone is a three-term past president of the NPSOT Fredericksburg Chapter\, and has been gardening in Fredericksburg since purchasing her property in 2009.  Stone bought and restored a historic stone home on the edge of Fredericksburg and took the property from being so derelict that the realtor wouldn’t go inside to being on the 2012 Historic Home Tour.  The 10 acres surrounding the house were in equally horrific condition\, having been an exotic game farm/puppy mill that had “every conceivable weed that will grow in the hill country” says Stone. She recently built a dome home on the property and is designing the landscape that will surround it. \n\n\n\nThe chapter holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via online streaming (www.youtube.com/@fredericksburgtexasnativeg4884).
