Maintenance

Medium to slow growing. Adapts to a wide range of soils and light conditions. Leaves provide a golden color in fall. All parts aromatic. Prune for shape if a more tree-like shape is desired. Native habitat: very adaptable, alluvial thickets, rocky slopes, and gravelly places, canyons, on shady and open slopes, well drained, rocky soils, rocky bluffs, savannas, open woodlands, limestone glades, woodland edges.

Description

Blooms March-July. Attractive tall shrub or small tree with a slender, crooked trunk and smooth, brown bark. Compound leaves are divided into three oval leaflets that are pointed at the tip. Leaves have a citrusy scent when crushed. Small, greenish-white flowers grow in clusters among the leaves. The fruit is a distinctive, wafer like samara with broad wings. Larval host: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Giant Swallowtail.

Seed Stratification Wafer Ash seeds need a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. Place the seeds in a moist medium like sand or vermiculite, seal them in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 60-90 days. In spring, sow the stratified seeds in a seed-starting mix, barely covering them with soil. Germination can be erratic and may take several weeks. Ensure consistent moisture and warm temperatures (around 70°F). Semi-harwood Cutting Dip the cut end in rooting hormone to encourage root development. Plant the cuttings in a well-draining potting mix and maintain high humidity by covering the pot with a plastic bag. Roots should develop within a few weeks. Once established, gradually acclimate the cuttings to normal conditions before transplanting. Take semi-hardwood cuttings in mid-summer when the wood is mature but still relatively flexible. Select healthy, vigorous shoots and make a clean cut just below a leaf node, about 4-6 inches long. About the Region

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
