Registration is now open for our Spring Symposium at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on April 26.

Online registration is closed but you may pay at the door provided there is available space.  Cost is $65 at the door. A light breakfast, box lunch and full access to the Wildflower Center gardens is included.

The symposium will feature Dr Douglas Tallamy as the keynote speaker. Dr Tallamy is the author of the best-selling book Bringing Nature Home; How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens.

Other speakers include Dr Damon Waitt, Senior Botanist at the Wildflower Center; Dr Matt Turner, author of Remarkable Plants of Texas; and Mark Klym, coordinator of the Texas Wildscapes program and co-author of Hummingbirds of Texas. Jason Singhurst of the Texas Parks & Wildlife and co-author of Rare Plants of Texas will have a presentation on the new prairie preserve in College Park.

Authors will be available for book signing.

Doug Tallamy is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware where he has authored 80 research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, Humans and Nature, Insect Ecology and other courses for 32 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book  was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 silver medal by the Garden Writer’s Association. Dr Tallamy was awarded the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd Jr. Award of Excellence in 2013.

2026 Fall Symposium Logo

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
