Call for papers for Fall Symposium

A call for papers has been announced in conjunction with our Annual Fall Symposium to be held in Austin on October 15-18, 2015.

Each fall the Native Plant Society of Texas holds a symposium and annual meeting in a different region of the state. In 2015 the symposium’s theme will be Capit-O-lize on Natives: Contributions, Challenges, Conservation and will concentrate on the four ecoregions that surround the Capitol (Post Oak Savannah, Blackland Prairies, Cross Timbers & Prairies, and Edwards Plateau) and the way these ecoregions have influenced adaptation and variance in plants and plant communities, as well as human interaction with the landscape. Authors are encouraged to submit papers on research related to these subjects, as well as topics of general interest to those who work with native plants in the region.

Notification of intent to submit a paper should be e-mailed to symposium@npsot.org no later than May 1. Please include the following information: paper’s title, a brief description (150 words or less), author’s name, brief biography and contact information, including daytime and evening phone numbers. The Fall Symposium Speakers’ Committee will review all proposals and notify authors by June 1 of their status, along with instructions for submission of their final papers. Final papers accepted for inclusion in the Symposium Proceedings will be due no later than August 1. Selected papers also may be chosen for oral presentation.

More details on the symposium will be released as they become known. The event will be held at the Austin Airport Hilton.

About the Region

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
