iNaturalist bioblitz commemorates Texas Native Plant Week

Since 2009 the Texas legislature has designated the third full week in October as Texas Native Plant Week.

Members of our Society were instrumental in establishing the designation, and over the years we have celebrated in a number of ways, with plant sales, gifts to libraries, public plant walks and many other ways. In 2016 we were able to plan a grand opening of our Monarch Waystations on I35 during Texas Native Plant Week.

This year we have partnered with Texas Parks & Wildlife and Texas Agrilife Water University to celebrate Texas Native Plant Week with an iNaturalist Bioblitz.

The point is to see how many plants can be observed using the iNaturalist app during the week of October 20 – October 27. All plant observations made during the week in Texas with a photo will automatically be added to the project.

You can participate by making observations using the app. You can also make observations by taking a photo with a digital camera and uploading the photo to the desktop app. Many people prefer taking photos with a camera because of the better quality or because it can be difficult to use a smartphone in the field. If you can’t get into the field, then you can also help by confirming observations using the desktop app.

If you haven’t used iNaturalist it is easy to get started. Just visit iNaturalist.org, sign up and download the app. Then start making observations. The app will help you identify observations by making suggestions.

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
