Texas Native Grapes – July 20, 2023

Texas has more species of wild native grapes than any other state. Join us to learn about Texas's major native grape species, their characteristics and distribution, and methods used to cultivate them in home gardens and vineyards.

Urban Permaculture – August 17

Permaculture is coined from permanent culture and integrates a holistic perspective in the design of sustainability in food, housing and community. Carol will provide an introduction to urban permaculture and review the work of Urban Harvest Permaculture Design Certification Program to bring forward the reconnection to ecological wisdom principles. She will highlight native plants, layers of a food forest, and plant guilds to restore nature and strengthen food access. 

Nature Walk – September 21

In lieu of a regular presentation at our monthly meeting, Please join us at 6:45 pm on Thursday, September 21 (3rd Thursday) at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center for a walk through the Arboretum grounds. We will observe plants along the trails. We will gather in the room and have light snacks.

Amending & Blending Soils for Native Plantings – October 19

Come explore some custom tricks of the trade for prepping soils specifically for a variety of native plants, including approaches for improving and restoring existing soils as well as recipes and techniques for blending your own mixes from scratch.

Annual Native Plant/Seed Swap and Potluck – November 16

Join us for one of favorite annual events and swap some plants and seeds! We will have a few announcements, folks will talk about what plant babies they've brought, then it will be a mad dash to pick your most coveted plants! This is always a fun event. What's better than free plants, right?

NPSOT-Houston Holiday Dinner – December 21

Rather than hold our regular third-Thursday monthly meeting during this busy time of year, our tradition is to gather for a meal and some fellowship with other native plant enthusiasts. Join us any time after 6:30pm; the restaurant is a buffet so it will be easy for people to come and go as their schedule allows!

Predatory Garden Insects from the Nature Discovery Center – April 18

Join us to have a look at the various predatory insects that can be found in the native plant gardens at the Nature Discovery Center, such as assassin bugs, ladybird Beetles, and Wasps. We will also talk about what you can do to encourage them to stay and prey in your garden.
