The Native Plant Society of Texas is offering 14 classes this fall at 8 different locations around the state. The one-day classes are part of the Native Landscaping Certification Program, a series which teaches best practices for native plant landscaping – including wildlife habitat gardening.
Classes are open to the public and intended to be useful both to homeowners and professionals. Three levels are offered. Anyone may register for Level One classes, which is a prerequisite for the Level Two and Level Three classes. Click through to the class list to find a class and register.
Each class includes both classroom instruction and fieldwork, with an emphasis on helping students become familiar with the identification and use of specific plants native to their region. Students will see native plants in their natural habitat, illustrating their use in the landscape. Each level presents 45 native Texas plants recommended for your landscape and 5 plants to avoid.
The Native Landscaping Certification Program began in 2006 as an idea of some of our San Antonio members. The first classes were held in 2009. Then a few years later a second group began offering similar classes in Dallas-Fort Worth. In 2014 the programs were combined and a grant from the Faye L. and William L. Cowden Charitable Foundation enabled the Society to begin expanding the program across the state. Almost 2000 students have completed a class so far. Additional classes in the series are being developed.
