Hi all – For those who have not seen a review of Michael’s book, see below (end of e-mail). The reviewer tells the truth, and many of us have copies and can attest to that. You might find it at Front Street as it goes through its transition; if not, Amazon will have it for you.
Here’s more – for the past 6 or so months a band of hardy NPSOT volunteers have been watering the gardens Jim Martinez designed for us at Railroad park in Alpine. Thank you to Cathy Wright, Tom and Phyllis Kennedy, Karen Little, Maurie Cunningham, Sam Martinez, Lynda Douglas, Jane Sager, Martha Latta, and Brandt Buchanan who are up there every other day helping the garden look its best. We are getting ready to make water available on the east (our) side of the park, thanks to Sam Martinez’ deft plumbing skills, so this job will be easier than ever. There is a rota and each person is scheduled about twice a month. If you’d like to become a waterer, please get back to me by e-mail, and tell me if there are days of the week you prefer, so I can schedule you appropriately. Next rota goes out July 1.
And even more – Programs are what keeps us having fun with NPSOT and learning. But they don’t happen automatically. I need 3 or 4 members who would like to create – or learn to create – programs for the chapter. This means meeting a couple of times in the next month to put together 8 programs for the 2018-19 season – the first meeting will rough out the schedule and discuss which programs would fit where. Then each person is in charge of putting two programs together – calls/info/meeting place, etc – and at a second meeting a couple of weeks later, we fine tune and publish a season’s worth of programs for the members. I’ve been doing this since the beginning of the Chapter – 2002 – and can teach you all you need to know. It’s fun, it’s a learning experience and it stretches you! Step up – reply via e-mail and we’ll get going! Also, if you have a program idea you’d like to see come true, let me know.
Our web site – is about to get much better and more active. Bill Armstrong, Fort Davis member, is our new Web Master. Want to write a newsletter or submit other content for the site? Let me know by return e-mail and we can make a plan that puts you to work!
Fall Seed Gathering Classes – Patty Manning will be offering classes to teach us all how to locate, gather and process seed from along our highways and from our local gardens. She will give each participant a list of targeted plants/seed, let you know where to find them/how to gather seed /and how to store it for delivery back to her and other growers who will make plants from this seed appear at future plant sales. Our thanks to Patty! Our target date for these classes is October – please mark your calendar so you’re heads up, and we’ll tell more as we get closer to fall.
