Maintenance

Is easy to grow and can tolerate a variety of soil types and moisture levels. Plant away from foot traffic to avoid spines. Wear gloves to handle. WARNING: all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. Plants are not commonly sold commercially, but seeds are available. They may naturally show up in your yard and are worth keeping for their beautiful flowers and wildlife value. Native habitat: disturbed areas, fields, dry, open grassy areas.

Description

Blooms March-August. A tall, bristly stemmed plant with white juice that turns yellow after it has dried. Large leaves are blue-green, lobed, spiny, and covered with a whitish bloom. Produces large, showy, white cupped flowers with yellow filaments. The fruit is a green capsule.

Seed Stratification Stratification can increase germination rates. This involves mimicking the natural conditions experienced by seeds in their native environment. A period of cold, moist stratification (e.g., 4-6 weeks in a moist medium in a refrigerator) is recommended. Sow seeds directly into well-draining soil mix, barely covering them, as they require light for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can take several weeks to months. Collect ripe seed pods from white prickly poppy, ensuring they are dry and brown, indicating maturity. Seed Scarification Without smoke or fire treatment some plants will sprout, but there will be some built-in dormancy. To achieve a higher rate of germination, you can start a small smoky fire with pine needles or straw above your seeded area. After the fire burns out, spread the ashes and water them in. Some people have had success buying all-natural smoke flavoring from supermarkets, diluting it with 10 parts water and soaking the seeds in the solution before sowing. If you are starting seeds in flats, you can periodically pass smoky branches underneath. Plant in a well weeded area, and be patient for germination. Root Division The sections should be replanted immediately in well-draining soil. About the Region

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
