Plans underway for fall symposium

Plans are underway for our fall symposium on the weekend of November 3-4 in Huntsville. The site will be the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, which is on the campus of the university. The museum facility is a modern building in a park-like setting with an auditorium and lots of room for exhibits and break-out sessions. It has up to date audio-visual equipment and wi-fi.

The symposium planning committee has issued an invitation for presenters and exhibitors on topics related to the theme of “Challenges to the Pineywood Forests: Fire, Fragmentation and Biodiversity.” Interested presenters should submit a bio and abstract by July 17 to Ricky Linex, who is the chair of the planning committee. Or send ideas for topics and presenters you’d like to see to Ricky. Some possible topics are: History of the Pineywoods · The Lumber industry through time from Hardwoods to Pine · The Use of Prescribed Burning in the Pineywoods Region · Pitcher Plants and Sundew Bogs, Where the Carnivorous Plants Roam  · Rare Plants of the Area · Current Research on Native Plants of the Pineywoods · Restoration of Coal Mining Land in the Post Oak Savannah · Restoration of Native Plants

If you can help on some aspect of symposium planning please get in touch with either Ricky or Pam Middleton. Help is needed on organizing a photo contest, recruiting vendors and exhibitors, making catering arrangements, planning workshops and activities, coordinating volunteers, logistics/signs, planning the Friday night off-site dinner, assisting with field trips and tech advice/equipment set-up, and many other details.

There are a number of suitable hotels within a short distance of the site.

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
