Research grant recipient to study genetic variations in Comanche Peak prairie clover

Congratulations to Seth Hamby, the 2018 Ann Miller Gonzalez Graduate Research Grant recipient.  Seth attends Tarleton State University in Stephenville. His research topic is “a study to determine patterns of regional genetic variation in the North Central Texas rare endemic species Dalea reverchonii, or Comanche Peak prairie-clover.” About the importance of his research Seth says: “There are certainly multiple factors affecting survivorship [of species]. By comparing genetics to a widespread species, our findings could inform future conservation measures and eliminate unnecessary or unfruitful actions. This type of study is becoming increasingly more important as we work toward preserving Earth’s biotic diversity.” The Education Committee members agreed that Seth’s research was important to fulfilling the Society’s mission of “promoting research, conservation and utilization of native plants and plant habitats of Texas through education, outreach and example.”

Seth is claiming the full $2000 available in the grant. He commented that the money came at a critical time because he was really beginning to worry about how he would finance the rest of his research. He plans to finish the research and defend his thesis this fall, graduating in December, 2018. He will also present his findings at our fall symposium in San Antonio.

Graduate students who are enrolled in a graduate program in biology, botany, horticulture, landscape design, or related field at an accredited university or college in Texas; and will be pursuing research related to Texas native plants and/or to conservation and restoration of native-plant habitats of Texas are eligible to apply for the grant. This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
