State board adopts education project

The Native Plant Society of Texas on Saturday committed itself to developing a state-wide education program, with a series of classes focussed on landscaping with native plants geared toward the public and professionals.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“We’re witnessing a sea change in landscape design due to the pressures of population increase and water scarcity,” said State Board President Bill Hopkins.

“The public recognizes the wisdom of landscaping with plants that are already perfectly adapted to local conditions. Our intention is to provide classes both for the homeowner and for landscaping professionals who want to learn how to incorporate native plants into built environments.”

Previously, separate but related classroom programs have been operated by the Dallas Chapter and by the San Antonio Chapter, both of which have been very popular. The State Board appointed a new committee to incorporate the local programs, steer development of the project and ensure consistent classes around the state.

Dallas landscape architect Carol Feldman, who was appointed chair of the committee, said they expected to develop new classes for East Texas and the Hill Country. Classes in new regions will be rolled out slowly because the committee wants to adapt each class to the local ecoregion where it is offered.

The project will be partially underwritten by a generous grant from the Faye and William L. Cowden Charitable Foundation with additional financing provided from registration fees. Other grants are being sought.

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
