Choosing and Maintaining Plants to Support Monarchs and other Butterflies

The Monarch butterfly is an iconic species that is probably the most commonly recognized member of the Lepidoptera. In San Antonio, we have a special relationship with Monarch butterflies. We see the adults and the larvae in the Spring when the Monarchs are heading north and then again in the Fall when they are migrating back to Mexico. As native plant enthusiasts, we provide plants that support these charismatic members of the Nymphalidae family of butterflies when they are adults and also when they are in the caterpillar stage of their lifecycle. In this presentation, we will describe the life cycle of Monarchs, their migration process, and the environmental and agricultural changes that threaten the existence of these annual visitors. We will emphasize the plants that serve as larval hosts and those that sustain adult Monarchs. Since milkweeds are the most important larval host plant, we will describe in detail these native plants, their propagation, and their availability at local nurseries. We will also include a brief description of plants to sustain other butterflies. In response to a newsletter request, we received many excellent images that will used in this presentation; we are very grateful for this enthusiastic participation of SANPSOT members.

Fred Loxsom is a retired professor of physics (not botany!), a former president of the chapter, and a certified graduate of NPSOT’s three excellent Native Landscape Certification Programs. He attended a NWF workshop – Monarch Train the Trainer – in February at the San Antonio Zoo and this talk is partially fulfilling his commitment to advocate for Monarchs.

Chapter meetings are held every 4th Tuesday of the month except August, November, and December. They are free and open to the public. So come join us!

About the Region

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
