Trout Lily Walk
Update! Meet at McCommas Bluff tomorrow, Saturday, March 5th @ 10AM!!
We have a date!! Tim Dalbey will lead us on a walk to see White Dog-toothed Violets better known as Trout Lilies. On Saturday, March 5 from 10am-12pm Tim will lead us through McCommas Bluff (Map #1) and another site to be determined. We’re also hoping to see Texas Buckeyes in bloom near the trout lilies!
From downtown Dallas, head south on Hwy 175 and the exit Loop 12/Buckner Blvd. Turn right onto Loop 12 and an immediate left south on Murdock Road. Turn right/west on Fairport Road and park at the dead end. We’ll walk in towards river (west) from there and turn right to Elam creek and turn right going up southern stream bank and trail goes into Texas Buckeye trees as well as trout lilies.

The other site possibilities are the Post Oak Preserve (Map #2), Devon-Anderson park (Map #3), and/or the Gateway Park (Map #4).
Map #2: Post Oak Preserve in southeast Dallas, sometimes the premier location for the violets located across from the DISD Environmental Center off Bowers Road Seagoville
Map #3: Devon-Anderson Park heading south on Jim Miller after the Bruton intersection turn right off Petty Lane to dead end cul de sac, descend steep trail not heavily used from cul de sac on northwest side, turn right at bottom where they may still be wood walking bridge across a deep gap and trail ascends to the left on the other side of the bridge where trout lilies are located but not numerous in the past.
Map #4: Gateway Park on the left if heading south on Jim Miller, turn into park gravel parking lot before Keeton golf course entrance to the south and park, head south to the base of the bluff (an abandoned wooden kiosk is there) and go to the right around the base ca. 100-200 feet and trout lilies are at the base, then, if you want more walking go back around the base and ascend the trail to the top and there are trout lilies in various spots along the trail to the central open area with large mountain cedars
March Speaker
On March 21, Becky Rader will speak to us on White Rock Lake’s flora and fauna. If you missed her speak for the Master Naturalists or NPAT, you have another chance! If you did catch a lecture, she has promised to include more native plants for us.
Becky Rader, a native Dallasite, is doing great work by serving on the City of Dallas Parks and Recreation Board for City Council District 9. She is a wildlife biologist and she also serves as the chief naturalist at Dallas Museum of Natural History at Fair Park. She is also a member of the White Rock Lake Task Force.
Request for Volunteers
We are currently looking for people to help with coordinating the NLCP classes this year, a membership chairperson, Earth Day volunteers, and a plant sale coordinator.
Host Chapter Lead/Administrator task/responsibilities for the Dallas NLCP classes include admin work (book location), lining up the teachers, coordinating the plant walks, the plant samples, the books for display, and publicity. You won’t be alone as Janet Smith will help with printing handouts and obtaining snacks. Susan Jones has also offered to share many of the tasks. Marie-Theres will also be able to provide some advice on what she’s done in the past.
We would also like a person to help welcome new members and thank renewing members more proactively. There are no deadlines with these tasks and may be easier for some, but no less important.
The Texas Conservation Alliance has generously offered to share their FOUR booth space at Fair Park’s Earth Day with NPSOT on April 22 – 24. We’re hoping for volunteers to help man the tables and help spread the word. Hopefully we can have enough overlap to let volunteers “play” at the event.
With all our other new goals we’re looking for some additional help coordinating the spring and possibly the fall plant sale(s). Main tasks are to coordinate donated plants, acquiring wholesale plants to sell, and minimal coordination of supplies for the event.

NLCP (Native Landscape Certification Program) Classes
Level 1 is now available for registration! It is schedule for Saturday, May 14 @ Trinity River Audubon Center, 6500 S Great Trinity Forest Way, Dallas, from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Register at http://www.npsot.org/wp/nlcp/ Volunteers for this class are also needed! Can you help?
We are still working on a class for Level 2 & 3. I know there’s a demand for Level 3 and do see there will be one in Denton on June 11. See the above link for more information.
NPSOT Outreach in 2016
Thank you so much for all your ideas and suggestions for outreach this year! Our current outreach focus is a native plant coloring book. We need photos of plants, pollinators, wildlife, and text.
