On March 16, 2015 – Ricky Linex from USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service of Texas will talk about the “Riparian Management – Why Creeks Act the Way They Do”

Come and learn about the interaction of water, soil or sediment and vegetation as it relates to the health of streams and their associated riparian areas. What can be done about creeks that have down cut and are actively eroding? What caused this action and can the creeks heal themselves? In many cases if we remove the hindrances to riparian function the creeks can repair themselves, though this process may be limited in urban settings which have hindrances that may be difficult to remove or avoid.

Ricky Linex is a wildlife biologist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service headquartered in Weatherford, Texas. Linex works 51 counties in north central Texas covering the Rolling Plains, Cross Timbers, Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah vegetational regions. He has worked 32 years with NRCS in Goldthwaite, Snyder, and Abilene with the past 12 of those years in Weatherford. He is the author of the brand new “Range Plants of North Central Texas: A Land Users Guide to Their Identification, Value and Management”, a plant identification book for north central Texas. This book has 324 grasses, forbs and woody plants of the area and is full of photos. A valuable addition within this book is the detailed browsing, grazing and seed value of each plant for cattle, sheep, goats, deer, dove, quail and turkey.

Ricky will have is new book for sale. It’s in its second printing!  It’s a great book and many people appreciate it for the amount of pictures per plant; most have FIVE! Our society’s president, Bill Hopkins, wrote a wonderful review, and BRIT’s review, and Ricky’s own words. See page 2. Be sure and bring $20 cash or check.

This low-elevations region of Texas extends inland from the barrier islands, about 60 or so miles, and stretches from Brownsville to Louisiana. In total, it covers about 9.5 million acres, with a high point of 150 feet in elevation. More than 1000 species of plants can be found in this region. On the southern end, species more common in Mexico (such as Sabal mexicana) and Central America occur.

The barrier islands provide us with dune systems, and clay flats to the inland side, which have species found in these areas alone. Many plants here, such as Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory), can be found throughout tropical regions of the globe. I’ve encountered the same species on the beaches of Guam.

Once inland, vast marshes and wet prairies occur. Occasionally, oak (Quercus fusiformis) groves can be found. Common grasses include species of Bothriochloa, Paspalum, and Sporobolus; eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides); and switchgrass (Panicum species). Many rivers and creeks cut through the Gulf Prairies, and along these riparian areas various species of trees, Sabal minor, and other plants adapted to clay soils can be found. Due to overgrazing, farming, and fire suppression, woody species such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and huisache (Acacia farnesiana), and invasive species such as chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum) have increased and displaced our native flora.
