SEPTEMBER MEETING
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 9 A.M.
ACTON NATURE CENTER
6900 SMOKY HILL CT.
Come join us for a tour through the Acton Nature Center. It may still feel like summer, but our native plants know the seasons are changing. Eryngo and Snow on the Mountain/Snow on the Prairie have been blooming and by the time we are touring the nature center looking at fall plants, Indian Grass and Gayfeather should be blooming, along with many other native plants.
Dr. Billy Teels, Rio Brazos Master Naturalist will lead us on a tour of this beautiful 74 acre tract of land developed by the Friends of the Acton Nature Center along with the Rio Brazos Master Naturalists and the Lake Granbury Master Gardeners. Along with trails there are butterfly and hummingbird gardens (this time of year think Monarchs!) a restored farmhouse, an operational windmill and a bird observation area.
Dr. Teels served for over 30 years as a biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Maryland and Washington, D.C. He received his Ph.D. in wildlife ecology from Mississippi State University in 1975. He currently lives in Granbury and has been a member of the Rio Brazos Master Naturalists since 2007.
There is a bathroom facility with flush toilets and running water. You should plan on sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and water.
If you’re unsure of this location and google fails you, go north on Hwy 377 and turn right on the road next to Kroger. When you come to the T in Acton, go right until you reach the stoplight at Smoky Hill Ct. There is a large sign for Acton Nature Center; you’ll turn left at the light and the road deadends at the Center. De Cordova Bend entrance is to the right at the stoplight.
Hope to see you there.

ADDITIONAL SEPTEMBER TOUR
CENTRAL TEXAS NATIVE SEEDS PROJECT
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 9 A.M.
TEXAS AGRILIFE RESEARCH CENTER
1229 U.S. Hwy 281 N., Stephenville
Randy Bow’s presentation of the research and development of native plants for commercial resale by the Texas Native Seeds was very interesting.
One of their development growing areas is in Stephenville, so we have scheduled a tour of these facilities which gives you an opportunity to look more closely at the work being performed. Even if you didn’t attend the meeting last month, this will be an interesting and informative tour.

UPCOMING EVENTS
NPSOT FALL SYMPOSIUM
October 3-5
“Conserving Native Plants of the Texas Coastal Prairies”
South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center, League City
This year’s annual symposium will focus on conserving native plants in the upper Teas coastal prairies. There will be speakers, a photography show, tours, dinner, silent auction and much more. The venue is on the south side of Clear Lake across the lake from the Johnson Space Center. This is always a good meeting with the chance to meet many other native plants enthusiasts and learn about another eco-region in Texas.
If you’re interested in attending, please go the state web page and you’ll see where to register for the symposium and make hotel reservations. Go to www.www.npsot.org.
NPSOT ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST
The annual photo contest has always been a “people’s choice” contest. In the past only those attending the state symposium could vote, but the voting is now online, any member can vote and you’re encouraged to do so. Voting must be complete by September 30. This year there are 70 photos entered in twelve categories, which are the eco-regions of Texas. If you’re interested and looking at great photos and also voting please go to: https://nativeplants2018.wufoo.com/forms/medsfys1xbjh3g/

FALL PLANT SALE

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26
8:30 A.M. – 1 P.M.
IN FRONT OF NATIVE PLANT GARDEN
GLEN ROSE COURTHOUSE SQUARE
Tell all your friends and neighbors. This is the best time to plant woody plants so come on down and stock up on your favorites, or pick up a plant to fill a special spot. We’ll have many different types of perennials, shrubs and trees.
We also need volunteers to help set up, assist customers, and clean up afterwards, so please contact Marcia Miller if you can help out. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge of and interest in native plants with members of the community.
Please note; if you have any plants you’d like to contribute to our sale please pot them up as soon as possible so they have time to acclimate and grow new roots. Thank you!

OCTOBER MEETING
HOW TO PRUNE TREES AND SHRUBS
JOINT MEETING WITH SOMERVELL COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
OCTOBER 28, CITIZENS CENTER, 209 SW BARNARD ST., 6 P.M.
Plan to attend this fabulous presentation, and please tell all your friends and neighbors. We all need to know how to prune correctly whether we’re doing the job ourselves or supervising someone else. We are very fortunate to have Steve Chaney, Tarrant County Horticulture Agent, speak on pruning native and non-native trees and shrubs. As always this program is free and open to the public.
WORK DAYS
We have work to do in our demonstration garden to make sure it looks its best for our plant sale. We will have a work day Saturday, October 5, 8:30 – 10:30 and can use extra help. We hope to develop and plant our back area behind the log cabin, plus we always have pruning and weeding to do.
We will also have an extra work day before the plant sale, and will send out a notice on that date and time.
As always please remember to bring water, a hat, gloves, and any of your favorite tools.
